~ Tilings with Transcendental Inflation Factor ~

Dirk Frettlöh (Universität Bielefeld) began by observing that the inflation factor of a one-dimensional substitution tiling with finitely many prototiles is always an algebraic integer and never a trascendental number. His recent joint work with Alexey Garber and Neil Mañibo has asked the question if this remains the case when the number of prototiles is infinite. His talk illustrated that a transcendental number can then indeed occur, with some of the fine detail yet to be fully worked through before the work can be published. Believing it existed, he explained how his group then searched for and found a key concrete example. The slides of Dirk's talk are publicly available.
