Michael Baake heads up the aperiodic research group at the University of Bielefeld, Germany. A young university, founded in 1969, the main building is one of the largest structures in Europe, and houses all faculties. This promotes interdisciplinary research, perfect for work on aperiodicity with its tenticals that reach into so many other areas of mathematics, physics and biology. In 2018, Bielefeld was rated amongst the top four universities in Germany for mathematics. Here, Michael is in conversation with Jens Marklof with Franz Gähler in the background.
