~ Aperiodic Lattice Structures Beyond Aesthetics ~
Chikwesiri Imediegwu (The Open University) is researching practical applications of aperiodically ordered structures in engineering. The drive is to find aperiodic replacements for structures currently designed around the periodic. Synthetic bones (hip replacements) and the girders used in the construction of bridges and building may have greater strength and less weight and cost when based upon aperiodic designs. Resilience to loading from unexpected directions may be another desirable feature that characterises such aperiodic designs. Chikwesiri's talk showed that numerical analysis and experimentation are hinting that aperiodicity may well become a routine part of mankind's engineering future.
