Professor Natalie Frank

~ Generalizations of the Rudin-Shapiro sequence ~

I've looked over a few of Natalie Frank's (Vassar College) many research papers on aperiodic tilings that arise from substitutions. In particular she is the author of a lovely paper for beginners entitled A primer on substitution tilings of the Euclidean plane. Today she discussed several of the counterintuitive properties of the Rudin-Shapiro sequence and its generalisations. She noted that “a mutual interest with Uwe arose from the fact that this sequence has an absolutely continuous part of its spectrum, despite being automatic”. She talked us through the spectral theory of qubit spin substitutions. The photograph shows one of the beautifully intricate geometric figures used in illustrating her talk.
