~ Cyclotomic Aperiodic Substitution Tilings ~

Stefan described himself as an engineer and graphic artist. His talk presented several of his recently discovered (2017) visually attractive 10-fold cyclotomic aperiodic tilings. Many mathematicians work on aperiodic tilings of minimal complexity but Stefan likes a more psychedelic effect. To that end he presented a mathematical tiling which exhibited elements of chaos. Also discussed was an intriguing physical sculpture that Stefan had designed and constructed from a few hundred laser cut small metal tiles, each held to its neighbours with tiny nuts and bolts. This self rigid mechanical structure was aperiodic. At the end of the exhibition I helped him unscrew several of the bolts to allow this large exhibit to be packed away for the journey home. I suspect a trail of minuscule nuts and bolts lie like breadcrumbs on any ground that Stefan has walked over! Stefan's 2017 paper on Cyclotomic Aperiodic Substitution Tilings upon which his talk was based can be read in the journal Symmetry.
