Professor Edmund Harriss

~ Aperiodic Art ~

In another of the early talks, Edmund Harriss (University of Arkansas) looked at how aperiodic tiling patterns have been used in the modern day to decorate facades and courtyards in peoples homes, but with resonances reaching back to some ancient notions of pattern, especially in Islamic geometric art. He showed several stunning examples of his own aperiodic tiling designs physically realised on walls and floors. The slide in the photograph shows an “Algebraic Number Starscape”, a lovely geometric visualisation of algebraic numbers in the complex plane. It's from a research paper Edmund co-authored with Katherine Stange and Steve Trettel, published in 2021.
