~ Celebrating the discovery of an aperiodic monotile ~
One of the big discoveries of 2023, as far as mathematicians are concerned, was the discovery by a Yorkshire artist, David Smith, of a single shape that could tile the plane only aperiodically. Previously, and not for a lack of trying, the best achieved utilised two. Details of what had been unearthed appeared in mainstream newspapers such as this excellent report from the 4th April 2023 edition of The Guardian. It has been claimed that the discovery will revolutionise material science. The announcement of the discovery of the tile, known as the Hat, took place in March. To celebrate, a two day festival, HatFest, was organised four months later at the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford. Number Wonder attended all of the talks, admired the exhibits, and took many photographs. These are herein presented along with brief commentary and links to recordings of the talks themselves and related academic papers.
