~ A Cut-and-Project Approach to Periodic Approximants ~
~ of 12-fold Square-Triangle-Rhombus Aperiodic Tilings ~
Having established the context into which their research sat, Alastair handed over to Petra to talk us through the analysis of the specific type of example of the talk title. She discussed some key stages at which their were options on how best to proceed; how best to develop the mathematical modelling of the aperiodic pattern deduced from the oil physics experiment. Petra's focus was upon cut-and-project methods and how these can approximate aperiodic patterns with periodic. This is done by replacing irrational numbers with increasingly accurate rationals and, in particular, use was made of the continued fraction approximations to the square root of three. The best place in their equations to do this was not obvious and several possibilities and combinations of possibilities had been explored. It was a privilege to be given such an insight into work still in progress.
