Trophy

~ 3D Printed ArtWorks ~

A sporting trophy is often a cup, bowl, tankard, urn or jug; an object that can hold liquid. Yet, when presented as a prize, the fact it is a receptacle for fluid is irrelevant. The form no longer needs its traditional function. What remains is a need for a physical object with visual appeal such that to all who see it know it's an award. Ceramic artist Michael Eden, realising this, enthusiastically embraced 3D printers when they became commercially available in 2006. The new technology allowed him to reimagine classic pottery shapes as clustered 3D printed thick nylon lines with mineral coatings in bright colours. The Bristol Museum and Art Gallery has acquired one of his works, Bloom, from 2016. They typically cost around £10,000 each, assuming one can be found for sale. A spectacular meeting of old and new.
