~ Sequences of Matrices and Substitutions ~
Jörg Thuswaldner's talk began with a careful explanation of how a continued fraction expansion can give rise to a sequence of matrices. He then explored properties of these matrix sequences. What is the nature of the convergence; weak, strong or exponential ? What happens in higher dimensions ? Then a link was established to substitutions on words. What do the sequences of matrices tell us about the substitutions ? The talk picked out pieces, first from this paper, and then this other paper, along with some new material, not yet published. Some great ideas were presented, new to me, and it was fun trying to keep up with the twists and turns of the narrative.
