~ From Chaos to Order ~
The third talk of the day was a commendable attempt to present a 'bigger picture' view of symbolic dynamics embedded within a measure preserving system (MPS). Two variables were given special focus; entropy and mixing. An arrangement that is periodic has zero entropy and no mixing. A Bernoulli scheme (such as flipping a coin) is at the other extreme with positive entrophy and weak mixing (over time the randomness of the statistical distribution is uniform). Felipe's talk gave a flavour of the details to be addressed to put such ideas on a sound footing and gave examples of systems that are between the two extreme cases. This was a good talk that presented some grand ideas in an accessible manner. For a taste of Felipe's published work I suggest Local Entropy and Descriptive Complexity.
