~ A Cornucopia Of Bounds ~
As at most Universities, there is a tradition at Derby whereby a newly appointed lecturer gives a talk to introduce themselves. Although Petra was appointed four years ago, the first presentation of the day was her “I have arrived” talk. It focussed on what types of subwords occur as arithmetic subsequences in a right-infinite word formed from a substitution rule. She assumed little and carefully developed the ideas from the basics of substitution systems. As a concluding flourish, she presented a lovely visualisation of several of the results derived algebraically earlier in her talk. Some of the ideas have their origin in her 2022 paper with Ibai Aedo, Uwe Grimm and Yasushi Nagai; Monochromatic Arithmetic Progressions in Binary Thue-Morse like Words.
