~ A Workshop at The University of Derby ~
It was with enthusiasm that I attended a workshop at The University of Derby on Recent Advances in Symbolic Dynamics, March 2024. This is a highly active area of current mathematical research in which strong progress is being made. The public profile of The Aperiodic has surged since the discovery of the Hat in 2023. The photograph shows a physical realisation of the Hat, produced at The Open University. It shows how this single monotile can be used to tile a two dimensional plane aperiodically, then stretched into a third dimension. Physicists, crystallographers and engineers are as interested in the aperiodic as mathematicians, with the result that this workshop would involve a meeting of ideas sourced from a diverse group of participants.
