~ Aperiodic Systems Through the Lens of Information Theory ~

Our second talk was on an interesting approach to gaining insights on some classical physics models focusing upon, as a particular example, the dimer model on the Ammann-Beenker tiling. Maciej Koch-Janusz is concerned with the issues surrounding model reduction; “given a high dimensional and complex description of a full system, how does one reduce it to a small number of important collective variables” ? In the aperiodic case, analytical and numerical methods cannot make use of translational symmetries. None the less, some the the ideas of Information Theory can be usefully adapted to this relatively new setting.
